Accessibility is a requirement, not a theme setting

An AI builder can generate a page in seconds, but it will not guarantee that people using screen readers or keyboards can use it.

WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C Recommendation for web accessibility, and Level AA is the usual legal and contractual target. The WebAIM Million 2026 tested the top one million home pages in February 2026 and found:

  • 95.9% had detectable WCAG 2 failures, up from 94.8% in 2025.
  • An average of 56.1 errors per page, a 10.1% rise in one year.
  • Low contrast text was among the most common problems, alongside missing alt text, missing labels and empty links.

Platform averages differed: Squarespace 33.0 errors, Wix 33.3 and WordPress 52.8. WebAIM notes that more errors cannot always be blamed on the platform, since site owners add the content. So the builder helps, but your colors, images and buttons decide the result.

Quick checks after any AI generation:

  1. Contrast: body text against its background should meet the AA contrast ratio.
  2. Alt text: every meaningful image needs a description; AI-written alt text needs review.
  3. Keyboard: tab through the page and confirm every link and button is reachable.
  4. Headings: one H1, then a logical order.

Watch the add-on costs

The plan price is rarely the whole bill. Store transaction fees, extra contributors, AI credit top-ups and bandwidth overages can change the ranking for your site. Price your first year with the add-ons you will really use. If your site needs custom code or a web app rather than pages, our AI coding tool rankings are the better starting point.

How to choose

  1. Write a one-paragraph brief: what you sell, who visits and the three pages you need.
  2. Generate a draft from that brief in two builders on free plans or trials.
  3. Edit one page by hand to see how much control you keep after the AI step.
  4. Run the accessibility checks above on each draft.
  5. Price year one, including domain renewal and any fees.
