Reviewed 14 October 2026 against Perplexity, OpenAI and Google documentation. HumanRank has not yet run its own citation accuracy test, so this page reports a documented comparison, not a measured ranking.

Short answer

Perplexity is the strongest documented starting point for source-led search. It attaches numbered citations to every answer, and in the Tow Center's 2025 test it had the lowest error rate of eight AI search tools, at 37%. Use ChatGPT deep research when you need to restrict research to specific sites, and Google's tools when the job reaches into your Gmail and Drive. Open every source before you repeat a claim.

What independent testing found

A citation tells you where to check, not that the answer is right.

The Tow Center for Digital Journalism ran 1,600 queries across eight AI search tools, asking each to identify a news article from an excerpt. Collectively, the tools gave incorrect answers to more than 60% of queries (Columbia Journalism Review, March 2025).

The test ran in early 2025 on news attribution, a hard task, and the tools have changed since. It is still the clearest public evidence that confident, cited answers can be wrong.

How to check an AI search answer

  1. Ask a narrow question with an answer you can verify.
  2. Open every cited source that supports a claim you plan to repeat.
  3. Classify each claim: supported by the source, partly supported, or not found in the source.
  4. Search for contrary evidence. A good result surfaces disagreement, not only confirmation.
  5. Record the date, because answers change as indexes update.

Can I limit ChatGPT deep research to specific websites? Yes. You can restrict research to the domains you enter, or prioritize them while still searching the full web.

Can Gemini Deep Research use my own files? Yes. Deselect Google Search to limit research to other sources such as Gmail or Drive.

How long does Gemini Deep Research take? Google says reports usually take about 5 to 10 minutes.

What is query fan-out? Google's term for how AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and searches for each at once.

Do Perplexity's source labels depend on payments? Perplexity says partnerships, payments and other business arrangements do not affect a site's label.

Is AI search better than a normal search engine? It is faster at summarizing, but the 2025 Tow Center test found over 60% incorrect answers on news attribution. Use it to find sources, then read them.
