The 4 tools on the same fields

HeyGen

  • Best for: marketers and creators who need avatar ads, product explainers and translated versions fast.
  • Main limitation: photo avatars skip the consent check. HeyGen's avatar consent documentation says only digital twins go through consent capture, and that getting a photo subject's agreement is your responsibility.
  • Price or plan limits: Free $0 with 3 videos a month up to 1 minute; Creator $29 a month ($24 billed yearly); Pro $49 a month; Business $149 a month plus $20 per seat, with 5 custom video avatars and videos up to 60 minutes.
  • Commercial use: the HeyGen terms of service limit free-plan output to personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use, while Creator, Pro and Business users may use output commercially.

HeyGen's Pro plan costs $49 a month with 1,000 credits and 4K export, according to HeyGen's pricing page on 17 October 2026.

Synthesia

  • Best for: enterprise training, onboarding and internal communications where approvals and consent records matter.
  • Main limitation: fewer minutes per dollar. Paid credits add roughly 12 minutes (Starter) or 60 minutes (Pro) of video a month on top of a 10 minute free allowance.
  • Price or plan limits: the Synthesia pricing page lists Basic at $0, Starter at $29 a month billed monthly with 1,250 credits, and Pro at $89 a month with 6,000 credits. Downloads are Full HD 1920 x 1080; the free plan carries a Synthesia watermark and cannot download.
  • Custom avatars: 3 personal avatars on Starter, 5 on Pro, unlimited on Enterprise, and a Studio avatar add-on at $1,000 a year for annual plans.

Synthesia's Starter plan costs $29 a month billed monthly and includes 3 personal avatars, according to Synthesia's pricing page on 17 October 2026.

Colossyan

  • Best for: L&D teams that turn documents and slides into courses with quizzes, branching and SCORM packages.
  • Main limitation: resolution tops out at 1080p below Enterprise, and unused minutes do not roll over.
  • Price or plan limits: the Colossyan pricing page lists Starter as free with 20 NEO minutes and 0.5 NEO2 minutes a month, and Professional at $59 a month on yearly billing with 30 NEO minutes, 10 NEO2 minutes and up to 3 editors. Studio avatars cost $1,000 a year as an add-on.
  • Custom avatars: 15 on Starter, 20 on Professional, unlimited on Enterprise. The Colossyan terms make the customer responsible for consent, require subjects to be at least 18, and keep custom avatars available only during the subscription term.

Colossyan's Professional plan costs $59 a month billed yearly with 5 SCORM exports a month, according to Colossyan's pricing page on 17 October 2026.

D-ID

  • Best for: animating a single portrait, building talking avatar agents and wiring avatar video into an app through the API.
  • Main limitation: the D-ID Studio pricing FAQ says each video is rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds and unused minutes expire monthly, so many short clips waste allowance.
  • Price or plan limits: Trial and Lite videos carry a D-ID watermark; API usage draws on the same minute balance as the web app.
  • Commercial use: the D-ID help center says Trial, Lite and Build are for personal use only, and Pro, Advanced, Enterprise, Launch and Scale allow commercial use.

D-ID rounds every video up to the nearest 15 seconds, so a 70 second clip uses 75 seconds, according to D-ID's Studio pricing FAQ on 17 October 2026.

Cloning a real person is where avatar tools differ most, and where buyers carry the legal risk. The Synthesia avatar documentation requires a live consent recording for every personal avatar; uploaded consent clips are refused, and the person in the consent video must match the footage or photo. HeyGen offers three levels: a webcam consent statement for all customers, uploaded consent videos for enterprise accounts, and a skip for accounts that sign an indemnity agreement. Colossyan puts the duty on the customer through its terms and bans avatars of anyone who has not consented.

Treat vendor checks as a floor, not a substitute. Keep a signed release that names the uses (ads, training, translation), the term, and what happens to the avatar when the person leaves the company. Colossyan's terms already end custom avatar access with the subscription; your release should cover the same exit.

The US Copyright Office's Copyright and Artificial Intelligence report, Part 2 (published 29 January 2025), concludes that prompts alone do not give users enough control to be authors, so purely AI-generated material is not copyrightable. Your script, edits and arrangement can be protected; the generated avatar performance by itself likely cannot. Part 1 of the same report (31 July 2024) covers digital replicas and recommends a federal law against unauthorized ones.

In Europe, the European Commission's AI Act page states that deep fakes must be clearly and visibly labeled and that the transparency rules take effect in August 2026. If an avatar resembles a real person and could pass as genuine footage, add an on-screen disclosure.

How to choose

  1. Write one 60 second script you would actually publish, such as a product explainer or a policy update.
  2. Render it on the HeyGen and Colossyan free plans with a stock avatar, and in Synthesia's free allowance.
  3. Create one custom avatar of a consenting colleague and note each vendor's consent steps and processing time.
  4. Check the export: resolution, watermark, and whether your plan permits commercial use.
  5. Price a realistic month of output in minutes or credits, including rounding and rollover rules.
  6. For training content, import the SCORM file into your LMS before you buy.

How we rank

We compared each tool's documented plans, monthly prices, video minutes or credits, maximum video length, export resolution, stock and custom avatar limits, consent and verification flows, and commercial-use terms. Every price and limit comes from the vendor's own pricing, help or legal pages as listed on 17 October 2026; all prices appear in US dollars. Picks weigh value for typical marketing and training workloads against consent safeguards. Our full method is on the HumanRank ranking methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Is HeyGen free for commercial use? No, HeyGen's free plan output is licensed for personal, non-commercial and internal evaluation use only. Commercial rights start on the Creator plan at $29 a month, as listed on 17 October 2026.

Can I make an AI avatar of someone else? Only with their explicit consent. Synthesia requires a live consent recording from the person shown, HeyGen requires a consent statement for digital twins, and Colossyan's terms require the subject to be at least 18 and to have freely consented.

Which AI avatar generator exports in 4K? HeyGen exports 4K on Pro at $49 a month and above. Colossyan lists 4K only on Enterprise, and Synthesia lists Full HD 1920 x 1080 downloads.

Do unused avatar video minutes roll over? It depends on the vendor. HeyGen rolls unused monthly credits over for one more month, while Colossyan and D-ID state that unused minutes do not roll over.

Can I copyright a video made with an AI avatar? Only the human-authored parts. The US Copyright Office's January 2025 report says prompts alone are not enough for authorship, so your script and editing choices can be protected but the purely generated performance likely cannot.

Do I have to label AI avatar videos? In the EU, yes for deep fakes: the AI Act requires them to be clearly and visibly labeled, with transparency rules applying from August 2026. Labeling is good practice elsewhere too.

What does a custom studio avatar cost? Both Synthesia and Colossyan list professionally filmed studio avatars as a $1,000 a year add-on. Instant or personal avatars are included in paid plans at no extra charge.

Which AI avatar tool is best for training videos? Colossyan is the best fit for courses because Professional includes SCORM exports, interactive videos and course creation. Synthesia is the stronger choice when consent controls and enterprise governance come first.
