Best for
Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers who live in the browser: researchers comparing several tabs, people who want a page summarized without copying text into a chat, and anyone who already pays for Perplexity and wants the assistant beside their reading. If you are choosing the best AI browser for research, Comet's tie-in with Perplexity's cited answers is its strongest argument.
Main limitation
Agent actions run with your logged-in sessions. Perplexity's guide to controlling what Comet Assistant can use lets you block the assistant on specific sites, and its own example is blocking your bank. That control exists because an assistant that can click inside your accounts can also be misled inside them.
Perplexity's plan guide lists 80 Comet Assistant queries a month on Enterprise Pro and 800 on Enterprise Max, and none on the Free plan, as checked 17 October 2026.
What Perplexity Comet does
Comet is a Chromium-based browser with three AI layers on top of normal browsing:
- Assistant panel: ask about the current page, summarize it, or pull context from another tab with
@tab. - Agent tasks: the assistant navigates, clicks and fills forms on your behalf. Perplexity's launch post describes Background Assistants that work on tasks in parallel.
- Perplexity search by default: the address bar runs Perplexity search. You can switch engines, but Perplexity's help center says some AI address bar features stop working if you do.
Perplexity released Comet free to everyone on 2 October 2025 after a limited launch on 9 July 2025. You do not need a Perplexity account to browse or try basic features, but signing in adds history, sync and higher limits.
Perplexity made the Comet browser a free download for everyone on 2 October 2025, according to its launch post.
Plans and Comet Assistant limits
The Perplexity plan comparison guide lists browser agent (Comet Assistant) queries as unavailable on Free, as monthly allowances on Pro, Education Pro and Max, and as fixed numbers on the two Enterprise plans. Consumer allowances are described as "average use" or "advanced use" rather than counts, so a heavy user should expect limits without knowing the exact number in advance.
Max is the plan built around Comet. The Perplexity Max help article lists Max at USD 200 a month or USD 2,000 a year, with annual billing available only on the web app, and adds Max Assistant, a Comet mode that routes requests to stronger reasoning models with the highest weekly agent limit of any plan. Perplexity's October 2025 launch post said the Email Assistant was available to Max subscribers.
For most people the decision is simpler: install Comet free, use it as a browser for a week, and only pay if the assistant saves you real time.
Platforms and setup
Perplexity's operating system requirements page lists:
- Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit x64 and ARM64
- macOS 13 Ventura or later, Intel and Apple Silicon
- 4 GB of RAM minimum, 8 GB recommended
- At least 2 GB of free disk space
Linux and ChromeOS are not supported. The Comet product page advertises Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and the help center has an Android quick start guide, while the requirements page still lists mobile as unsupported for the desktop browser. Treat the mobile app as a separate product with its own feature set.
Because Comet is built on Chromium, most Chrome Web Store extensions install, and you can import your data, including saved passwords, from another browser.
Agent security and prompt injection
This is the section to read before you turn on agent tasks. In August 2025 Brave's security team published research on indirect prompt injection in Perplexity Comet. Their proof of concept hid instructions in a Reddit comment. When a user asked Comet to summarize the page, the assistant followed the hidden text: it opened the user's Perplexity account page, requested a one-time login code, read it from the user's logged-in Gmail, and posted both back to Reddit.
Brave reported the issue to Perplexity on 25 July 2025. Perplexity shipped an initial fix two days later, Brave found it incomplete, and after the 20 August 2025 disclosure Brave added that Perplexity "still hasn't fully mitigated" this kind of attack and re-reported it. In a second post on 21 October 2025, Brave showed instructions hidden as faint text inside screenshots being run by Comet's assistant, and called indirect prompt injection "a systemic challenge facing the entire category of AI-powered browsers."
Brave's security team showed in August 2025 that hidden text in a Reddit comment could make Comet read a Gmail login code and post it publicly.
Perplexity's current defenses, from its Comet Assistant privacy and data use article, are a first-run prompt before any advanced agent starts (allow once, always allow, or don't allow), a per-site block list, and a switch to disable the assistant entirely. The assistant controls article adds that Comet never has access to your passwords or payment data.
Practical steps:
- Choose "Allow this time only" rather than "Always allow" for agent tasks.
- Block the assistant on banking, health, payroll and work email domains.
- Run agent tasks in a separate browser profile that is not signed in to sensitive accounts.
- Never ask the agent to summarize pages with untrusted user comments while those accounts are open.
An AI browser agent acts with your logged-in permissions, so give it the least access that still gets the task done.
Data and privacy
Perplexity says Comet Assistant does not access or upload your browsing history, full list of open tabs, cookies, passwords, local files or text you type on sites unless a request needs it. When a request does need page content, history items or other tabs, that context is stored for up to 30 days to power your library and is then deleted; these threads appear as Temporary threads you can delete sooner. Incognito mode stops the assistant indexing your activity.
Training is a separate setting on your Perplexity account. The data collection article says AI Data Retention is enabled by default for Free, Pro and Max users, and you switch it off under Account settings, Preferences. Opt-outs apply only to data collected afterward. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max data is never used for training.
Perplexity's data collection article says AI Data Retention is on by default for Free, Pro and Max accounts, and opting out does not remove data already collected.
Our AI tool privacy checklist lists the settings to change on any AI service before the first upload.
Alternatives worth comparing
- ChatGPT Atlas. OpenAI's browser has an Ask ChatGPT sidebar and an Agent mode. The OpenAI help article on Atlas agent mode says the agent cannot run code, download files or install extensions, pauses on sensitive sites such as banks, and offers a logged-out mode that ignores existing cookies. That logged-out mode is a direct answer to the risk Brave described.
- Claude in Chrome. Anthropic's Claude plans page lists Claude in Chrome on Pro, from USD 17 a month billed annually or USD 20 monthly, and above. It adds an assistant to the browser you already use instead of replacing it.
- Perplexity without Comet. If you mainly want cited answers, the Perplexity app does that without a new browser. See our Perplexity review and the full Perplexity plans and pricing profile.

Frequently asked questions
Is Perplexity Comet free? Yes, the Comet browser is a free download for everyone since 2 October 2025. Comet Assistant agent queries need a paid Perplexity plan; the Free plan includes none.
Do I need a Perplexity account to use Comet? No, you can browse and try basic AI features without one. Signing in adds saved chats, history sync and higher limits.
Does Comet work on Linux or Chromebooks? No, Perplexity lists Linux and ChromeOS as unsupported. The desktop browser runs on Windows 10 and 11 and on macOS 13 or later.
Can Comet use Chrome extensions? Yes, Comet is built on Chromium, so most extensions from the Chrome Web Store install and run.

Is Perplexity Comet safe for online banking? Keep the assistant off for it. Brave showed in 2025 that hidden page text could steer Comet's agent, and Perplexity's own controls let you block the assistant on your bank's site.
How many Comet Assistant queries does Enterprise Pro include? 80 a month, according to Perplexity's plan guide checked 17 October 2026. Enterprise Max includes 800.
