What an AI photo editor really costs
Every AI photo editor on this list now meters generative edits, and the metering matters more than the sticker price. Adobe's plans show the gap clearly: Photoshop alone gives 25 generative credits a month, the Photography plan 1,000, and Firefly Pro or Creative Cloud Pro 4,000 with unlimited standard features like Generative Fill. If you fill or expand dozens of images a week, the $19.99 Photography plan can run dry while Firefly Pro at the same price will not, though Firefly Pro lacks desktop Photoshop.
Photoroom and Canva split tools into free and metered tiers. Photoroom's core cleanup tools cost no credits on any paid plan, while its AI backgrounds and video do. Canva's background remover uses no allowance on paid plans, but generated backgrounds do. Pixlr resets subscription credits at each renewal rather than letting them pile up. Before you buy, list the three edits you make most and check which tier each falls in.
Who can train on your photos
Uploading personal or client photos to a cloud editor raises a fair question: can the vendor use them? Adobe's content analysis FAQ, last updated 4 June 2026, says Adobe does not analyze your content to train generative AI models unless you submit it to Adobe Stock, and that files stored only on your device are never analyzed. A separate content analysis setting for product improvement can be switched off on personal accounts; business and school accounts are opted out automatically.
Canva's Trust Center privacy page says Canva will not use your content to improve AI features unless your privacy settings allow it, and that Business, Enterprise and Education content is excluded. Check that setting on a personal Free or Pro account before uploading anything sensitive. Our AI tool privacy checklist walks through the same questions for any app.
No AI edit should go into a news photo, legal record or insurance claim without a note saying the image was altered.
How to choose
- Pick five photos you edited last month: a portrait, a product shot, a landscape, a low-light image and one with a distracting object.
- Run the same three edits (object removal, background change, generative expand) in the free trial or free tier of each shortlisted tool.
- Count the credits each edit used and multiply by your monthly volume.
- Export at the resolution you publish at and zoom to 100% to check edges, hair and text.
- Read the refund rule before paying: Photoroom allows a week, Luminar 30 days, Pixlr none.
- If you need images made from scratch rather than edited, compare our AI image generator rankings and the Adobe Firefly review.
Profile photos have their own tools; see our AI headshot generator picks. If design templates matter more than photo depth, our guide to switching from Canva and the Canva pricing profile cover that side.
How we rank
We compared each editor's documented plans, prices, AI credit allowances, which edits consume credits, export and resolution limits, platforms, refund terms and data training policies. Every price and limit comes from the vendor's own pricing, help or policy pages as listed on 17 October 2026, in US dollars. Picks weigh editing depth and the cost of a realistic month of AI edits for each type of user. Our full method is on the HumanRank ranking methodology page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI photo editor for beginners? Canva is the easiest start because photo editing sits inside a drag-and-drop design tool with a free plan. Move to Luminar or Photoshop once you want masks, layers and finer control.
Is there a free AI photo editor? Yes, with limits. Canva Free includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, Photoshop has a 7-day free trial, and Pixlr has a free tier with paid plans from $1.99 a month billed yearly.
Does Photoshop Generative Fill cost extra? It depends on the plan. On the Photoshop and Photography plans, Generative Fill uses generative credits (25 and 1,000 a month); Firefly Pro and Creative Cloud Pro list standard AI features like Generative Fill as unlimited.
Can I buy an AI photo editor without a subscription? Yes. Luminar sells a $129 desktop license as a one-time payment, though its AI tools are included for 365 days and then need a Luminar Prime renewal.
Which AI photo editor is best for product photos? Photoroom, because background removal, shadows, retouch and AI Fill cost no credits on paid plans, and Pro includes 1,000 exports a month for $7.50 billed yearly.
Does Adobe train its AI on my photos? No, according to Adobe's content analysis FAQ, which says Adobe does not analyze your content to train generative AI models unless you submit it to Adobe Stock.
Do AI credits roll over? Usually not. Pixlr resets subscription credits to the plan amount at each renewal, and Canva's allowance resets each billing period; Pixlr's separately bought credit packs never expire.
Is Lightroom included with Photoshop? Only on bundles. The Photography plan at $19.99 a month and Creative Cloud Pro include Lightroom; Photoshop on its own at $22.99 a month does not.
