Two markets, side by side
Careers in AI are not one ladder. The work, the entry route and the paycheck differ so much that it helps to treat them as separate job markets.
| Salaried AI jobs | Contract AI training work | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Build, deploy or analyze models and data products | Rate, rank, write and correct AI model outputs |
| Typical entry | Bachelor's degree for data scientists; master's for research scientists (BLS) | Online skills assessment plus ID verification |
| Time to first pay | Weeks to months of interviews | Days to weeks after passing a test |
| Pay as published | $120,230 median per year, data scientists, May 2025 | $25 to $50+ per hour, DataAnnotation general projects |
| Stability | Employee status, benefits | Independent contractor, project-based, no minimum hours |

The research end of the salaried market pays more. BLS puts the median annual wage for computer and information research scientists at $140,300 in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 22 percent from 2025 to 2035. On the contract side, DataAnnotation's FAQ lists general projects starting at $25 to $50+ per hour, coding projects at $40 to $150+ per hour and professional projects in law, finance or medicine at $40 to $125+ per hour.
Find work: every AI jobs guide in this section
Each guide below covers one slice of the market. One checked fact per card, so you can pick the right starting point.
- AI training jobs: Mercor lists a $112 per hour average contracted rate on its experts page. The guide compares eight platforms on entry tests, pay and payout schedules.
- Data annotation jobs: labeling, transcription and search rating work, including the entry tests each platform uses. Mindrift lists entry-level work at $15 to $30 per hour.
- Entry level AI jobs: roles you can apply for without AI experience. BLS lists no required work experience for data scientists, only a bachelor's degree.

The AI job market in numbers
Headlines about artificial intelligence jobs swing between collapse and boom. These four figures come from named sources with dates.
| Figure | What it measures | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3 million | New AI-related roles added globally in two years, including AI engineers, forward-deployed engineers and data annotators | LinkedIn data via the World Economic Forum, 15 January 2026 |
| 70% | Year-over-year increase in US roles that require AI literacy | Same LinkedIn report, January 2026 |
| More than tripled | Growth in US job titles that mention AI since 2022; 63% of them sit outside traditional tech occupations | Indeed Hiring Lab, reported by HR Dive, 13 July 2026 |
| 35% | Projected employment growth for data scientists, 2025 to 2035, against 3% for all occupations | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 data |
Checked 17 October 2026 at each source's own page.
Two cautions sit behind those numbers. LinkedIn's report says global hiring is running nearly 20 percent below pre-pandemic levels, so the AI share is growing inside a slower market. And Indeed's researchers note that many AI-titled roles are older jobs that now expect AI tool use, not new engineering seats. For a job seeker, that means AI skills help in far more roles than the title count suggests.
Remote AI jobs: which roles are remote and which are not
Searches for "AI jobs remote" and "AI jobs work from home" mostly lead to contract training platforms, and for good reason: that work is remote by design.
Fully remote by default. AI training and annotation platforms run online. Outlier says it has experts in 50 countries and asks for no minimum hours. Remotasks says it is available in more than 90 countries and pays weekly. CrowdGen, Appen's contributor platform, says most earnings are stated in US dollars and paid in local currency.
Remote with location limits. Some platforms restrict where you can live. The Handshake AI Fellowship requires you to be based in the US with valid work authorization. Outlier's FAQ asks for a valid ID and a mobile phone from your country of residence, and it does not sponsor work visas.
Mostly on-site or hybrid. Salaried engineering and research roles are less often fully remote. BLS describes data scientists as spending much of their time in an office setting, and most work full time. Expect to negotiate remote terms rather than assume them.
The practical rule: if a role is fully remote, pays in a currency you can receive, and asks for a skills test rather than a fee, it belongs to the contract market. If it offers benefits and a salary band, expect at least some office days.
Where to start by situation
| Your situation | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Need income this month | Apply to two generalist training platforms at once | Tests take one to two hours and projects can start within days |
| Hold a credential (law, medicine, finance, PhD) | Specialist tracks on Mercor, CrowdGen or DataAnnotation | Published rates reach $125 to $450 per hour for some clinical and legal roles |
| Working engineer | Coding tracks on training platforms while you apply for ML roles | DataAnnotation lists coding projects at $40 to $150+ per hour |
| No degree | Entry-level annotation and rating tasks | Mindrift's all-access tasks need no qualification test to start |
| Student | Internships plus a student-friendly platform | Outlier says students of legal working age can take part-time work |
Checked 17 October 2026 at each platform's own page.
For credential holders, the spread is wide. CrowdGen lists legal experts at up to $400 per hour and medical clinicians at up to $450 per hour, with a note that pay depends on location and skills. Treat the top of any "up to" range as a ceiling, not an average.
Before you sign up: checklist
Run every platform or recruiter through these checks before you hand over an ID or bank details.
- You never pay to start. The FTC says paying to get a job is a sure sign of a scam, and Appen's scam awareness page states it will never ask you to send money to apply.
- The rate is shown before you work. Outlier says you always see the tasking rate before starting a project; Mindrift says the same of each task.
- ID checks happen inside the platform. DataAnnotation uses Persona for identity verification after you log in, and says it will never ask you for money.
- The domain matches the official list. Appen publishes its legitimate domains and says official emails come only from @appen.com addresses.
- The first contact was not an unexpected text. The FTC's April 2026 alert on fake job texts describes recruiters offering "online assessor" work by text and asking you to reply "YES."
- Payout methods are named. Legitimate platforms list PayPal, Airtm, ACH, Payoneer or Stripe, plus a schedule.
- You know your tax status. Every platform checked here pays contributors as independent contractors, so set aside money for taxes.
