Editor or agent: where each one runs
Cursor is a code editor first. Cursor's Agent documentation describes an assistant that completes coding tasks on its own, runs terminal commands, edits files, controls a browser to check visual changes, and saves checkpoints before significant edits. Checkpoints are stored locally and separate from Git, so they undo agent mistakes without touching your commit history. Cursor also ships a CLI and cloud agents, but the editor is where most of the product lives.
Claude Code is an agent first. Anthropic's Claude Code overview lists five surfaces: the terminal CLI, IDE extensions for VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app, the web at claude.ai/code and the Claude mobile apps. The same engine reads the same CLAUDE.md project instructions, settings and MCP servers on every surface. Claude Code also runs in CI through GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD, accepts piped input, and schedules recurring work through routines that keep running when your computer is off.
That makes "claude code vs cursor" less of an either-or than it looks. Anthropic's overview links a direct install of the Claude Code extension for Cursor, so a developer can keep Cursor as the editor and run Claude Code inside it.
Anthropic's Claude Code overview, read 17 October 2026, lists terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web and a Cursor extension as supported surfaces.
Cursor vs Claude Code: what you pay for models
The biggest cost difference is how each tool pays for Claude models.
In Cursor, Claude is a third-party model. Cursor's models and pricing documentation says third-party models are not part of the included weekly pool. On Premium and above they bill at the model's API list price from the first request, paid from prepaid credit. Claude Opus 5.5 is listed at USD 4 per 1M input tokens and USD 20 per 1M output tokens, the same as Anthropic's own API rate. Plus and Free do not include third-party models at all. Teams and Enterprise add a Cursor Token Rate of USD 0.25 per 1M tokens on third-party models.
Cursor's own models are where the subscription goes furthest. The weekly pool covers Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5. Beyond the pool, Composer 2.5 costs USD 0.50 input and USD 2.50 output per 1M tokens.
In Claude Code, Claude models come out of your plan's usage. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Code on every paid plan, with Pro at USD 20 a month and Max from USD 100. When you hit the limit, you can wait for the reset, upgrade, or turn on usage credits billed at API rates. Developers can also skip the subscription and pay per token through a Claude Console account.
Cursor bills Claude Opus 5.5 at USD 4 input and USD 20 output per 1M tokens from prepaid credit on Premium and above, per Cursor's pricing documentation on 17 October 2026.
Usage limits and how they reset
Cursor's limits are weekly. The pricing page says every paid tier includes a pool of AI usage shared across Cursor and Grok, and the allowance refreshes weekly, "so one heavy day never wipes out your whole month." Premium includes 4x the Plus pool, Super 15x and Ultra 50x. Cursor does not publish the pool size in tokens or dollars. One detail matters for comparison shopping: the pool is shared with Grok Chat, Imagine, Voice and Grok Bot, so heavy chat use elsewhere draws from the same allowance.
Claude Code's limits follow Claude's plan limits. Anthropic's pricing FAQ says usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits on top, and activity in Claude chat, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draws from one pool. Pro gives at least 5x the Free plan's usage per five-hour session, and Max gives 5x or 20x Pro. Anthropic's plan usage article for Claude Code lists Max 5x at USD 100 a month and Max 20x at USD 200.
Claude Pro and Max share one usage pool across Claude chat and Claude Code, resetting every five hours with weekly caps, per Anthropic's pricing page on 17 October 2026.
Ownership and plan changes
Cursor's buying process changed in 2026. Its pricing page says subscriptions are sold only through X Subscription Corp, as part of The X Subscription that bundles Grok, Cursor and X. Older Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans keep working for existing customers, so prices in older reviews may not match what a new customer pays. Our Cursor plan and ownership profile tracks those changes.
Claude Code's buying route is simpler: it is part of Claude's consumer and business plans, covered on our Anthropic plans and API rates profile.
Data and privacy
Both tools send your code to model servers. What happens next depends on settings and plan.
Cursor. The Cursor data use page, last updated 3 September 2026, says that with Privacy Mode on, customer data is not used for training by Cursor, and model providers do not store or train on it under zero data retention agreements. With Privacy Mode off, Cursor may use and store codebase data, prompts, editor actions and code snippets to train its models. Requests sent with your own API key still pass through Cursor's backend. Teams plans can enforce Privacy Mode for everyone.
Claude Code. Anthropic's Claude Code data usage page says Free, Pro and Max users choose whether their data trains future models, including Claude Code sessions. If you allow it, data is kept for five years; if not, 30 days. Team, Enterprise and API use is not trained on under commercial terms, with 30 day standard retention. Claude Code also stores session transcripts locally in plain text for 30 days by default.
Check the training setting on day one with either tool. Our AI tool privacy checklist lists the other settings worth confirming.
A coding agent's changes should be reviewed like any other pull request before they merge.
How we compared them
On 17 October 2026 we read Cursor's pricing page, models and pricing documentation, Agent overview and data use page, and Anthropic's pricing page, Claude Code overview, Claude Code data usage page and the Pro and Max plan usage article. We compared plans and prices, what each plan includes, usage limits and resets, model choice and model billing, supported surfaces and training defaults. Prices match HumanRank's provider profiles for Cursor and Anthropic.
