Academic integrity and what the research says

The biggest risk with AI study tools is not cheating detection. It is learning less. A field experiment with nearly 1,000 high school math students, published in PNAS in 2025 by Bastani and colleagues, compared a plain chatbot with a tutor version built to give hints instead of answers. The PNAS study record reports that the plain chatbot raised practice scores by 48 percent, but once access was removed those students scored 17 percent lower than students who never had it. The hint-based tutor raised practice scores by 127 percent and largely avoided the drop.

Use study mode, Guided Learning or Khanmigo for practice, and close the tool before you test yourself. For graded work, your school's academic integrity policy and your instructor's syllabus decide what is allowed. If a course allows AI, keep a note of what you used and how, and check any sources a tool cites with our guide to checking AI citations.

Age limits and student data

ChatGPT accepts users from 13 with parent permission under 18. Ask Quizlet starts at 14 and only in the US. Khanmigo requires an adult or a parent sign-up. The Gemini student offer is limited to US college students aged 18 and over, and some Gemini learning features are closed to under 18s. Gemini Notebook in the browser is open above the age of consent in your country.

On data, Google states that Gemini Notebook uploads are not used for training unless you send feedback, and that Workspace for Education users are never reviewed by humans. OpenAI lets you opt out of training in settings. Before you upload class material that includes classmates' names or graded feedback, run through our AI tool privacy checklist.

How to choose

  1. List the job: memorizing terms, understanding concepts, or turning notes into review material.
  2. Check the age and region rules above against your own situation.
  3. Upload one week of notes to Gemini Notebook and generate flashcards and a quiz.
  4. Take one homework problem to ChatGPT study mode or Gemini Guided Learning and ask for hints only.
  5. After a week, close the tools and quiz yourself cold. Keep the tool whose practice carried over.
  6. Pay only when you hit a limit. Our breakdown of when free AI plans are enough helps with that call.
