AI training jobs

EDITORIAL GUIDANCE Criteria stated, sources linked
SHORT ANSWER

Our first pick for AI training jobs is DataAnnotation, whose FAQ lists general projects at $25 to $50+ per hour and coding projects at $40 to $150+ per hour. It suits strong writers who can pass a one-time Starter Assessment of about an hour. Pair it with Outlier, which shows the rate before every project and pays weekly on Tuesdays. Credential holders should go straight to Mercor, which lists a $112 per hour average contracted rate, or CrowdGen by Appen, which lists clinical work at up to $450 per hour. US students can add the Handshake AI Fellowship. Apply to two or three platforms at once: projects start and stop with client demand, so one platform rarely fills a week.

The eight platforms on the same fields

AI trainer jobs all follow the same pattern: you apply online, pass a skills test, verify your ID, then pick up paid projects as an independent contractor. The differences are in who qualifies, what each platform publishes about pay, and how often money arrives.

Platform Run by Entry requirement Published pay Payout Where Best for
DataAnnotation DataAnnotation One-time Starter Assessment, ID check via Persona $25 to $50+/hr general; $40 to $150+/hr coding PayPal, a few days after request Fluent English required Strong writers and coders
Outlier Scale AI Associate degree or higher, skill screenings, ID check Rate shown before each project Weekly on Tuesdays; PayPal, Airtm or ACH 50 countries Graduates and grad students
Mercor Mercor Profile plus AI interview $112/hr average contracted rate Weekly Remote Experienced professionals
Handshake AI Handshake ID verification, project training Up to $17/hr to up to $125/hr by role Paid hourly US only, with work authorization US students and PhDs
CrowdGen Appen Qualification for each project $100+/hr top rate; up to $450/hr for clinicians Bank transfer, PayPal, Payoneer, Airtm Global, paid in local currency Licensed professionals
Mindrift Toloka CV plus assessment $15 to $30/hr entry; $60 to $100+/hr experts Twice a month Join from any country Beginners and domain experts
Alignerr Labelbox Persona ID check; some roles add an AI interview or domain test $80/hr average pay Stripe Connect or PayPal Remote Coders and STEM experts
Remotasks Scale AI Free online training Pay rises with task difficulty Weekly; PayPal or AirTM 90+ countries Labeling beginners

Verdicts in brief. DataAnnotation is the best first application for generalists because it publishes rate bands per track. Outlier is the most predictable payer, with a fixed weekly schedule and three payout methods. Mercor and CrowdGen are where credentials pay most. Handshake AI is the easiest route in for US students, though its generalist evaluation role is listed at up to $17 per hour. Remotasks is a labeling platform more than a training one; its sister site Outlier carries the writing and reasoning work. For image, audio and search rating tasks, see our guide to data annotation jobs and their entry tests.

What the work is

To get paid to train AI, you supply the judgment a model lacks. The task types repeat across platforms:

  • Writing hard prompts. Outlier describes writing a question in your field that would push a model into a wrong answer, then writing the correct answer.
  • Building grading rubrics. You define what a correct, complete response looks like so other raters and automated graders can score outputs consistently.
  • Rating and ranking responses. You compare two or more model answers and explain which is better and why. Mindrift says tasks range from simple ratings to complex multi-step assignments.
  • Rewriting weak answers. When the model falls short, you write the better response. DataAnnotation's generalist role description lists this alongside rating.
  • Code evaluation. You review, debug or write code against a spec. DataAnnotation lists coding projects at $40 to $150+ per hour and asks for programming experience in languages such as Python or JavaScript.
  • Expert scenarios. Professionals design realistic cases in their field. Mindrift lists consulting projects for senior consultants at up to $8,000 per month, and Mercor lists a physician talent network at $110 to $250 per hour.

Most projects run for weeks to months. Mercor says projects can be extended, shortened or concluded early depending on needs and performance, which is why a second platform matters.

What AI training jobs pay: generalist versus specialist

Every figure below is the platform's own published rate. "Up to" figures are ceilings, not averages, and none of these platforms guarantees hours.

Track Platform Published pay Unit
Generalist Handshake AI, AI evaluation specialist Up to $17 per hour
Generalist Mindrift, entry level $15 to $30 per hour
Generalist DataAnnotation, multilingual projects $20+ per hour
Generalist DataAnnotation, general projects $25 to $50+ per hour
Generalist Alignerr, English writing generalist $30 to $40 per hour
Specialist Mindrift, domain experts $60 to $100+ per hour
Specialist Mercor, average contracted rate $112 per hour
Specialist Handshake AI, software engineer Up to $120 per hour
Specialist DataAnnotation, coding projects $40 to $150+ per hour
Specialist CrowdGen, legal experts Up to $400 per hour

Checked 17 October 2026 at each platform's own page.

The split is stark: a credential or a coding skill moves you from the $15 to $50 per hour band into the $60 to $150+ band on the same platforms. If you hold a law license, a medical degree or a PhD, apply to the specialist track first; you can always take generalist work later. Handshake AI notes that pay is hourly, and its fellows quoted on the program page describe rates posted upfront.

How to start: four steps

  1. Pick two platforms (about 30 minutes). Choose one generalist platform and one that matches your strongest skill. Read each FAQ for degree, country and visa rules before you create an account. Outlier, for example, does not sponsor work visas, and Handshake AI requires US residence.
  2. Pass the assessment (one to two hours each). DataAnnotation says most Starter Assessments take about an hour and specialist tests one to two hours, and that you can take the Starter Assessment only once. Outlier says its general onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes, including skill screenings and ID verification. Mercor uses an AI interview that adapts to your field.
  3. Join a first project (days to weeks). DataAnnotation says approval emails usually arrive within a few days. Outlier adds project-specific onboarding after general onboarding. Read the project guidelines in full; quality reviews decide whether more projects open to you.
  4. Set up payout (minutes). Connect the payout method the platform names: PayPal, Airtm, ACH, Payoneer, Stripe Connect or Tipalti. Outlier pays on Tuesdays for work from the previous Tuesday through Monday; Mindrift pays on the 5th and 20th of each month.

If you are new to AI work generally, our guide to entry level AI jobs covers salaried starting roles too, and the AI evaluation career path shows how rating work can lead to full-time evaluation jobs.

Before you sign up: checklist

  • Is the rate visible before you start? Outlier and Mindrift both say the rate or reward is shown before each project or task.
  • Is joining free? Mindrift says joining is always free; DataAnnotation says it will never ask you for money.
  • Is the ID check run inside the platform? DataAnnotation and Alignerr both name Persona as their identity verification partner.
  • Are payout methods and timing named? A real platform lists methods and a schedule in its FAQ.
  • Do you meet the location rules? Handshake AI is US only, and STEM OPT is not supported.
  • Are you ready to be a contractor? Outlier states you work as an independent contractor, not an employee, so plan for taxes.

Scam warning

Fake AI training offers copy the language of real platforms. The FTC's alert on task scams describes "work" offered by text, WhatsApp or Telegram, where scammers pay a small amount, usually $5 to $20, to build trust and then ask you to deposit your own money, often in crypto, to release the supposed earnings. Real platforms never ask for a deposit. Apply only through the platform's own domain, and if a recruiter contacts you first, check the platform's site before replying.

Platform reviews

Two platforms get their own full pages. Our Outlier AI review covers requirements, pay evidence and payout in detail. Our DataAnnotation review covers the Starter Assessment, the rate tiers and how work availability changes with performance. For the wider market, including salaried roles, start from the full AI jobs guide.

How we researched this

On 17 October 2026 we read the home, FAQ, process and job listing pages for each of the eight platforms, recording the published pay, unit, entry steps, payout method and schedule, and country rules exactly as each platform states them. We also read the FTC's consumer alerts on task scams and fake job texts. Each verdict compares the platforms on those documented fields; our method is described on how HumanRank compares platforms.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI trainer? An AI trainer is a contractor who writes prompts, rates and ranks model answers, and corrects weak responses so AI models improve. Platforms such as Outlier, DataAnnotation and Mindrift hire AI trainers remotely.

How much do AI training jobs pay? Generalist work is published at roughly $15 to $50 per hour, for example $25 to $50+ per hour at DataAnnotation. Specialist work runs higher, such as Mercor's $112 per hour average contracted rate.

Do I need a degree to get paid to train AI? It depends on the platform. Outlier asks for at least an associate degree, while DataAnnotation accepts a bachelor's degree or equivalent real-world experience for general work.

Which AI training platform pays fastest? Outlier pays weekly on Tuesdays, and Remotasks pays weekly via PayPal or AirTM. DataAnnotation says PayPal deposits arrive within a few days after you request them.

Can I retake the DataAnnotation assessment? No. DataAnnotation says the Starter Assessment can be taken only once, with no retakes, so read the instructions carefully before submitting.

Can international students do AI training jobs? Sometimes. Handshake AI says F-1 students eligible for CPT or OPT may qualify, but STEM OPT is not supported. Outlier says your visa must permit work.

Is AI training work steady? Not guaranteed. Mercor says projects last weeks to months and can end early, and DataAnnotation says availability depends on demand for your skills and your past performance.

Are AI trainer jobs remote? Yes, all eight platforms here are remote. Some limit location, such as Handshake AI, which requires you to be based in the US.
