How to read an AI benchmark

EDITORIAL GUIDANCE Criteria stated, not a measured ranking

Before repeating a score, find the task, sample, product version and calculation behind it. Reproducing arithmetic from a file is different from independently repeating the original experiment.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Before repeating a score, find the task, sample, product version and calculation behind it. Reproducing arithmetic from a file is different from independently repeating the original experiment.

Find the unit

Determine whether a percentage is a pass fraction, model confidence, average score or editorial rating. These quantities are not interchangeable.

Inspect the sample

Ask whether the inputs resemble your work, whether failures were retained and whether the samples were reused for tuning.

Separate replay from replication

A public script can prove that numbers were combined consistently. It cannot by itself establish that the measurements were gathered correctly.

Read the uncertainty

A small numerical lead may not represent a reliable difference. Look for paired comparisons and uncertainty on the outcome you care about.
