Accuracy is not the same for every speaker

The audio you feed a transcription tool, and who is speaking, matter as much as the tool you pick.

A Stanford study published in PNAS tested speech recognition from Amazon, IBM, Google, Microsoft and Apple. Stanford's summary reports that the systems misunderstood 35 percent of words spoken by Black speakers and 19 percent of words spoken by white speakers, even when the words were the same. The tests ran in 2019 and engines have improved since, but the lesson holds: error rates vary by accent, dialect and recording quality.

What that means in practice:

  • Proofread the parts that matter. Names, numbers, dates and quotes are where errors cost you.
  • Use custom vocabulary where offered. Otter lists custom vocabulary on every plan.
  • Buy human review for legal or published work. Rev's human service exists for that reason.
  • Record well. A close microphone and one speaker at a time beat any model upgrade.

Transcribing a call means someone recorded it. Recording rules differ by state, and our AI meeting assistant guide explains consent. Before uploading interviews, therapy sessions or client calls, read the vendor's retention terms. Researchers handling participant audio should also check our notes for researchers, and anyone with sensitive files should weigh the free plan against a paid one using our free versus paid AI tools guide.

How to choose

  1. Estimate monthly hours. Under 1 hour, a free plan works; above 10 hours, a flat fee usually wins.
  2. Pick three real files: one clean, one noisy, one with several speakers.
  3. Run them through two tools on free plans or trials.
  4. Mark every error in names, numbers and speaker labels.
  5. Check the export you need, such as SRT captions or DOCX, before paying.

If you plan to edit audio or video by editing the transcript, read our Descript review. For turning transcripts into other languages, see our AI translation tool rankings, and for synthetic narration see our AI voice tool picks.
