Best ChatGPT alternatives

Our top pick is Claude, whose Pro plan costs USD 20 a month, or USD 17 a month billed annually, as listed on 17 October 2026. Among ChatGPT alternatives it is the closest like-for-like switch: a general assistant for writing, files and code, with Claude Code included on every paid plan and an annual discount ChatGPT Plus does not offer.

Switching from ChatGPT: what it does well and why people leave

ChatGPT remains a strong default. It handles drafting, file analysis, search, voice and image creation in one app, and the ChatGPT Plus help article lists Plus at USD 20 a month, billed monthly. If that covers your work, our ChatGPT review explains which plan fits.

People switch for four documented reasons:

  • Billing. OpenAI says it does not offer annual billing for Plus. Claude Pro does, at USD 200 a year.
  • Training defaults. OpenAI's article on how your data is used to improve model performance says content from Free, Plus and Pro may be used to train models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone." Thumbs up or down feedback can still make a whole conversation eligible.
  • Usage caps. The Plus article says limits such as message caps may apply during high demand.
  • Ecosystem fit. Gemini sits inside Google's apps, Grok inside X, and Perplexity builds every answer around sources.

ChatGPT Plus costs USD 20 a month with no annual billing option, according to OpenAI's help center on 17 October 2026.

The 5 tools on the same fields

Claude

  • Best for: long documents, careful writing, analysis and coding, with Projects to keep context together.
  • Main limitation: usage limits are relative ("5x or 20x more usage than Pro" on Max) rather than fixed message counts.
  • Price or plan limits: Free USD 0, with up to 5 Projects; Pro USD 20 a month or USD 17 billed annually; Max from USD 100 a month; Team standard seats USD 25 a month or USD 20 billed annually.

Anthropic lists Claude Pro at USD 17 a month billed annually or USD 20 monthly, according to its Claude plans page on 17 October 2026.

Gemini

  • Best for: drafting and research inside Gmail, Docs and Drive, plus anyone who needs more Google storage.
  • Main limitation: plan limits are stated as multiples, and Ultra's 5x and 20x tiers cost USD 99.99 and USD 199.99 a month.
  • Price or plan limits: the US Google AI plans page lists Google AI Plus at USD 4.99 a month, Google AI Pro at USD 19.99 with 5 TB of storage and a 1M token context window, and Google AI Ultra from USD 99.99. Prices differ by country.
  • Training default: the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says activity is kept 18 months by default, chats with Keep Activity off are kept 72 hours, and human-reviewed chats are kept up to three years.

Google's US plans page listed Google AI Pro at USD 19.99 a month with 5 TB of storage on 17 October 2026.

Perplexity

  • Best for: questions where you need to check sources, such as research, news and product comparisons.
  • Main limitation: a citation shows where to check, not that the answer is right. The Tow Center's 2025 study of eight AI search tools found Perplexity answered 37 percent of news-citation queries incorrectly, against 94 percent for Grok 3.
  • Price or plan limits: the Perplexity plan comparison guide lists Free at 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, Education Pro at USD 10 a month after SheerID verification, and Enterprise Pro from USD 40 a seat. Max costs USD 200 a month.
  • Training default: Perplexity's data collection article says AI Data Retention is on by default for Free, Pro and Max; Enterprise data is never used for training.

Perplexity's free plan includes 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, according to its plan guide on 17 October 2026.

Grok

  • Best for: answers that draw on recent public X posts, and people who already pay for X Premium or Cursor.
  • Main limitation: included usage is stated as multiples of the Plus plan (4x, 15x and 50x), and extra usage is billed at API list prices through top-ups.
  • Price or plan limits: the X Subscription announcement from SpaceXSI, the company formerly branded xAI, lists Free, Plus at USD 8, Premium at USD 30, Super at USD 100 and Ultra at USD 200 a month. Premium bundles the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+.
  • Training default: the Grok consumer FAQ says your content may be used for training unless you turn off "Improve the model"; Private Chat is excluded and deleted within 30 days.

SpaceXSI's X Subscription lists the Premium plan at USD 30 a month, bundling Grok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+, as announced 12 October 2026.

DeepSeek

  • Best for: developers who want low-cost API calls for extraction, summarization and agent subtasks.
  • Main limitation: DeepSeek's privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China and uses inputs to train its models, with an opt-out right you request.
  • Price or plan limits: the DeepSeek models and pricing page lists V4.1 Flash at USD 0.30 input and USD 1.20 output per 1M tokens at peak, and V4 Pro at USD 1.32 and USD 3.96, both with a 1M token context. Off-peak rates are half.
  • Training default: on unless you exercise the opt-out listed in the privacy policy.

DeepSeek's pricing page listed V4.1 Flash at USD 1.20 per 1M output tokens at peak, halved off-peak, on 17 October 2026.

Training defaults when you switch

Changing assistants resets your privacy choices. Every consumer plan in this guide either trains on your chats by default or asks you to choose, and each opt-out applies only from the moment you set it. Perplexity says previously collected training data cannot be removed. OpenAI and SpaceXSI both say feedback you send can still be used for training after you opt out.

Business tiers are different. Claude Team, ChatGPT Business, Perplexity Enterprise and Grok business customers are not used for training by default, according to each vendor. If you are moving a team off ChatGPT, compare business plans rather than personal ones, and read our AI tool privacy checklist before the first upload.

Switching from ChatGPT does not carry over your training opt-out, so change the setting on the new assistant before your first chat.

Where ChatGPT alternatives fall short

None of these is a full ChatGPT clone. Perplexity is built around search rather than long drafting sessions. DeepSeek's strongest case is its API, and its data location rules it out for many schools and companies. Grok's value depends on using X or Cursor. Gemini's best features assume a Google account you already rely on. Claude is the only one that matches ChatGPT across writing, files and code without a strong ecosystem tie, which is why it ranks first.

How to choose

  1. List the three tasks you used ChatGPT for most last month.
  2. Run the same three prompts, with the same files, on the free plans of Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.
  3. Check each answer against a source you trust, and note which needed the fewest corrections.
  4. Turn off training on each account before uploading anything private.
  5. Price a year: Claude Pro at USD 200 against twelve months of a monthly plan.
  6. Cancel ChatGPT only after a full week on the new assistant.

How we rank

We compared each assistant's documented plans, monthly and annual prices, free-plan limits, usage limits, context windows, platform ties and data training defaults, using vendor pricing, help and legal pages as listed on 17 October 2026, all in US dollars. Picks weigh how fully each tool replaces ChatGPT for typical writing, research and coding work against price and data terms. Our full method is on the HumanRank ranking methodology page.
